Post Office at Shanghai is maintained largely for the benefit of

the British Settlement at that place and for Imperial interests

generally. In these circumstances I should value Your Excellency's

assistance in getting the land, if not at a nominal rent, such as

I understand is paid for the original Post Office site, at any

rate at a great reduction on the rental that has been asked.
